Different foods sometimes bother different people, so there may be some trial and error involved. Pepper — both red and black — is a common gastrointestinal irritant, so passing on the pepper may improve your digestion. Chilies and other spicy food additives only bother some people, so you may not need to give up these flavors if you’re a fan of spicy food.
Foods that are hard to digest are often the culprit, so cut back on fats. And, although green vegetables are an important part of any diet, certain vegetables, namely broccoli, cauliflower, and brussels sprouts, can lead to gas and other stomach woes, so try cutting back on them. As for fruit, apples and melons are sometimes problematic for sensitive stomachs. If you eat beans frequently, discard the water you’ve soaked them in and cook them in fresh water; canned beans should be rinsed thoroughly before heating. Summer brings all the excitement and it is that time of the year when we plan for more outdoor activities. Fluid Intake
Since we tend to perspire more in the summer months we should drink plenty of water to keep ourselves hydrated. Most of us go for the packaged chilled drinks or soda since it is more convenient but fruits and vegetable drinks can be made at home, and that too, without preservatives and sugar which is healthier. Lemons, oranges, watermelon juices… etc., can be made in a jiffy! Instead of buying from the stores spare 5-10 minutes and have fresh healthy homemade fruit and vegetable juice. To me nothing is more thirst-quenching than a chilled glass of lemonade, herbal drinks or a glass of chilled green tea with a dash of honey and lemon. Go ahead and generously splurge in water and healthy fruit and vegetable drinks but take care that even homemade juice when had chilled, can disrupt the digestive tracts specially when taken on an empty stomach. It is also very important to keep in mind that we should not drink excess water. Plenty of water hydrates our system but too much of water can lead to water intoxication called hyper hydration which can even lead to death so do not bloat yourself to ill health. Clinical studies are beginning to show that development of pressure sores in hospitalized patients can often be reduced or even prevented by the addition of nutritional supplements to the patient’s diet. This new treatment along with innovative technology such as that found in the latest mattress overlay can hopefully make bedsores a thing of the past. This is welcome news for patients and caretakers alike who deal with the threat of this condition every day.
A study out of Israel observed the results of supplementing bedridden patients with certain fatty acids as well vitamins A, C, and E. The patients were already hospitalized for serious lung injury and were beginning to develop pressure sores. For the purposes of the study, 100 patients were chosen to receive either the standard hospital diet or the standard hospital diet supplemented with fatty acids and the vitamins. At the end of the study, which lasted seven days, the number of ulcers increased to 24 in the group of patients who were receiving the regular diet but only 15 new pressure sores appeared in the group that had had supplements added to their diet.
