The appendix is a small sac extending from the large intestine. It is normally self cleaning and does not cause problems. However, if its opening becomes blocked (usually by bowel material), bacteria can build up and the appendix may become inflamed and infected. This condition is known as appendicitis.

Appendicitis is most common in people age 10 to 30, although it does occur in younger children and older adults. It is rare before age two. Since small children often cannot describe pain well, their cases may become quite serious before they are diagnosed.

Once appendicitis begins, it usually worsens until the appendix ruptures, which spreads the infection to the other abdominal organs.

However, the appendix rarely ruptures within the first 24 hours. Observing the symptoms for 8 to 12 hours is usually safe and is often necessary to confirm the diagnosis. In most cases, appendicitis requires surgery.

Symptoms of appendicitis may include:

• Pain that begins around the navel or upper stomach and moves (localizes) to the lower right abdomen over the course of 2 to 12 hours.

• Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and constipation. Diarrhea is sometimes present but usually indicates the pain is due to some other cause.

• Low grade fever (100′ to 101′).
